Rattle Can Noise in 6th gear 2007 FLHT
In 6th gear there is a noise that sounds exactly like when you shake a can of spray paint. Bought the bike used, was doing it then, still doing it 10,000 miles later.
Popular reasons range from I need a new compensator, Or I need to install the 40287-07 IDS kit or because of pinging and lugging.
I do run in 6th at 60-65mph, been doing it for 10,000 miles. Bike has a 103 kit and a set of 204's in it...pulls like crazy. I also Run low revs in 5th and 4th but no noise, only in 6th....if lugging was the culprit ( but it's not lugging, I know what that sounds like) it would do it in the other gears at low revs as well, not just 6th.
So... Highway speeds, light load, low revs, rattle can noise. Higher speed, higher revs, more load, no noise (but everything else is louder. So it's hard to tell)
Doesn't seem to bother the bike just the driver
Comments?

103" motor, SE204 cams and "rattle" noise in sixth gear?? Sounds very much like detonation to me. The SE204 cams have a wicked advance curve, 8* ground in to the profile. Increasing the bore to has raised CCP which exacerbates the situation. If you have not had the motor dyno tuned, that might solve the problem. Otherwise take Marks advice and if you can't maintain 70mph+ in 6th gear, stay in 5th. You are probably running 91/93 octane fuel already but if not, you should be. You could also try spark plugs two heat ranges cooler than stock; sometimes that will help if the detonation is mild. You could also run some Seafoam through the motor and de-carbon the pistons. I will tell you that the pinging is not doing the motor any good at all.
I have had to remove SE204 cams from motors with higher CCP and replace them with cams with a later intake close because the denotation could not be tuned out without losing power.
