Default 5th gear whine, 09 Road King

New bike to me, questioning if this is normal. 4th gear and 6th gear are quiet. 5th gear has a "whine" noise. Its not a grinding noise nor does it sound horrible. Definitely different.

Does anyone else hear this? 14k miles.

Feedback appreciated

It is normal. The noise is due to the difference between straight cut and helical cut gears. Some light reading https://www.hdforums.com/forum/gener...cut-gears.html

Well thank God! Thank you for the response.
I bought this as a wreck. Needed forks, fender and wheel. Loved working on it but diggin into trans is beyond what im willing to do!

Already frustrated that my forks are banging when they fully extend. Think i need to get new dampener seals and tear them down again.....but that's for another post!

Yep ... the "09" is as Dawg stated ... I went to Redline Trans fluid and it helped ( maybe it was all in my mind ) ... I really don't notice the noise ( what noise ) now.

Default Mine does it too.

07 Softail Custom, 12k on the clock. Sounds like tire noise going over one of those expanded metal bridges.

08 Road King here, normal noise has been there from day1.

As stated above it's because of the cut of the gear teeth.
