What if you eliminated the compensator all together? Any issues with doing that?

There is a 30T engine sprocket that cames with a new chain from evolution manufacturing that changes the final gear to 3:16.1.It is a straight sprocket,no compensator. Can't find anybody that has one installed yet.I would like more info on this myself.Regards,Tom

The 31 tooth should be out this week.No comp isnt the way to go!You will end up beating the sh!t out of that already weak crank brg. There is no steel insert, just pressed into case. With a belt drive primary you still have some sort of shock absorbing ability. With the new style auto tensioner that seems to keep chain too tight now, something is going to take a beating. The final drive change is the way to go but more $$$$$ plus you will need sppedo corrected.

Bet the reason the chain is so tight is to try and quiet down the compensator.

So customer disservice is finally telling owners to put heavier oil in trans? And engineers are still working on this even though its NORMAL?Sounds like the MOCO is again putting their heads in the noose.Even if the Baker fixes the clatter which Im not so sure of.He seems to have added the clatter to the 5th gear whine noise recently? You as an owner should not have to pay for this out of your pocket and let HD off the hook.HD is hoping all of us will go away and indeed some have but some of us are still willing to ride this out. They will no longer speak w/me but I can still be a thorn to them as long as I own this junk.Pettersen put it in print and we all owe him one for that. There are people out there that have no idea about this. This past weekend I spoke to many in Johnstown that werent aware of the backlash with some of these 07s.Some have had it w/their dealers.Others like you are also considering going older. One guy was glad to meet someone else that has this problem.I have told HD that I would backoff if fix was coming,if warranty was prolonged till cure was found. Some here have statedwith more mileage than I have that the noise only gets worse with mileage. What did HD do with the info they got from the bikes tested? They found out that its going to cost them a fortune!

I also believe the clattering is a 100% primary issue, (nothing to do with gearbox what so ever). My guess isa overly tight primary chain along with primary and secondary crankshaft vibrationsetting up at certain RPMs in just the right amplitude to prevent the compensator from doing it's intended job.

Someof my reasoning centers around the Dyna and Softail having the same primary components, center distances etc. These models are pretty much free of clattering issues.

I'm also defining clattering as some sort of "clattering sounds" that emanate while the motor isn't being lugged.

Why then only in 5th gear and when cold...
Same RPM's can be created in all gears...
5th gear is quiet until motor warms up...
BTW I don't think it's lugging the motor as HD wants us to believe...when 5th clatters bad between 45 and 55 I can run in 6th with no noise.

High contact ratio gears aren't possible in production vehicles without state of the art, ultra high precision CNC machining centers. In simple terms, high contact ratio gears have more of a rolling interaction with it's mating gear than lower contact ratio gears, and for a longer duration measured in degrees, that in itself has the higher contact gear running quieter and with the ability to transmit more torque. Unless of course they are to tight, then you could get some whining. Clattering, not a chance.

When modern high contact ratio gears are referred to as being too tight and whining, the measurement between too tight, but still able to turn and just right are minuscule. Like wise for being too loose, minuscule measurements, not even remotely loose enough for anyone to detect any discernible clattering. The gears are a non-issue as far as I'm concerned when it comes to clattering noise.

I'm thinking more along the line of "process of elimination", but still guessing like everyone else!

Cynic - I agree with your reasoning and have a hard time believing a syncromesh transmission can produce such "clatter".That said, though, when I changed my '07's tranny oil at 8200 miles, there were a lot of metal particles on the magnetic drain plug. There was more than I have had in total out of my '98 Electraglide and it hasover 63,000 miles and I only changed tranny oil every 15-20,000 miles. My fear is that whatever is causing the "clatter" may also be causing the metal particles and possible transmission failure in the future. So what is the correlation between the "clatter" and 5th gear? If I am at 2000 RPM in 6th, there is no "clatter", but if I downshift to 5th at 2000, it sounds like the rods want to come out of the engine. An immediate downshift to 4th(or upshift to 6th) eliminates the noise. The noise is so bothersome & annoying, I use 5th gear as little as possible. Noise typically indicates that something is awry andharm is being done to some thing. But my symptoms are not exactly the same as others, since there are also complaints about noise in other gears, neutral, etc. Leads one to believe the noise is not the transmission.
