The engine sprocket is just that, it is a sprocket that fits on the crank. There are no extra moving parts to wear or fail, Compensators fail because they fail to get oil in them consistently and end up wearing out. The Baker comp has scoops on it to help get the oil into it, hence why I say it is the best of the bunch. That being said, there are no oiling issues with the engine sprocket as it is solid and has no moving parts...

I believe the comp also helps reduce stress on the crank.
Are you sure it is your comp and not chain slap ( from chain adjusters not functioning properly)?
Does it occur when you are cruising at steady speed downhill and back off the throttle, then crank it back?
What happens when you try this?

One way to test out the comp that Mark at Baker once posted is to:
have your bike in first gear and while holding the front break give some gas while slowly releasing the clutch (as if you were going to do burn out). When clutch starts grabbing to the point where your ride wants to really move you might hear knocking, rattle, or other noises. If you do hear those things then the comp is on it's way out.
