oil type for primary
Alright, I have come to the conclusion Im using mobil 1 syn in the engine and the mobil gear oil for the tranny.....
Now the primary, There is so many different opinions on this one... I would jsut buy the harley stuff, but have no dealer in area....
so how about this...I have some vavoline cycle oil 10w 40w that says its designed for wet clutches???? I was just going to use the mobil one 20w50, but there is so much debate on that one being good for the primary...
So what about the Vavoline??

RE: oil type for primary
The primary can use ANY 10w40 through 20w50 regular cheap motor oil. Some 10w40 motor oils say "Energy Conserving." If it does say that.....avoid it in the primary as it contains certain additives that will induce clutch slippeage. "Energy Conserving" usually is only found on 10w30 and below.....however just be on the lookout.
I usually use a diesel 15w40 in the primary though. It is about the right viscosity, is not "Energy Conserving", is inexpensive, and can be found anywhere. Once the weather finally gets cold, I also put 15w40 in the engine as well. I always have lots of 15w40 at the shop.
Whenever I develop a leak though....I put ATF in there. It is cheap and its coloring is red. It makes tracking down a leak much easier. Once the leak is repaired, however then I put 15w40 back in there.

RE: oil type for primary
We're talking about one quart in a 15-30000 dollar bike. I am using Redline in the Primary. They have a v-twin motorcycle primary oil, light 90, heavy 140. Cost 10-12 dollars or so. A unique transmission oil also. I like Amsoil for the Engine.
I figured outover my70 years that lubrication is the cheapest money and effort spent for long life machines. Any machine. These motorcycles are fun toys, I an not spending any of the time I have left on this earth worrying about lubrication.
