1st and 5th Gear whining, loud! Normal?
Just took delivery of an 08 Roaod King, came off an 07 Dyna, basically same engine, right?
 \\;
Anyway, brand new, and only 1st gear and 5th gear have a very loud whining, you can hear it coming and going from 100 yards away, around buildings, whatever.
 \\;
Took it back to the dealer, at first they say it's normal for the new 6 speeds. I say oh yeah, my last 6 speed didn't make this noise, the others on your floor don't make this noise. They got the hint that I wasn't happy and was not going to take that for an answer. They say they will call Harley to see how they want to handle it.
 \\;
My question is, I'm mechanically inclined, but not a motor or trans guy, what do you think the problem is, and should \\;I keep on them hard about it till they fix or replace.

first and fifth gears in Harley's six speed are not back-cut, like 2nd, 3rd, &\\; 4th, so they whine.
it's not something you can fix easily, unless you buy new gears from Baker or someone that are backcut. \\; however, switching to some better lube certainly helps. \\; I went with amsoil in my tranny, and it got much quieter and smoother.

Really loud whining is not good as clearances may be too tight on these straight cut gears. Light whining can be tamed with 75/140. Find out what's in there now for starters. I agree with you as for they should all whine more or less the same amount. One that's really noisy is showing a problem somewhere. Damn dealers all use the classic bs line and try and make you go away. Don't fall for it.
