Thumbs up ATF in primary

I hear a lot of people using synthetic ATF oil in their primary. Was thinking of
slapping in some Mobile 1 ATF in mine. good idea or not??

You hear about a lot of people doing a lot of things. Harley has been doing this for over 100 years, If ATF was the best thing, don't you think they would be using it ? Stick with the HD formula +

I just put a new clutch assembly into my `89 softail, and decided to try ATF, first time I dropped it in gear I noticed something strange...No clunk. I used Dexron type.

I have always used redline MTL which is a 70w80 GL4 gear oil with no moly in it. It has a pour point like a 5w30 motor oil so it reduces the clunk. You will get more chain noise with the ATF and even the MTL so I mix it 50/50 with redline MT90 manual trans lube. It comes out to about a 40w. Harley Formula+ is just a 50w oil with a crappy additive package. Try the Mobil1 ATF...you might like it.

We use ATF in all the bike we do unless the customer request something else. Be careful not to over fill your primary or the clutch will drag causing a "clunk" and/or difficulties finding neutral. Automatic transmissions have gears, clutches or bands, bearings, and if it is front wheel drive they even have chains, sound familiar????? Hope this helps.

I've used both a regular and synthetic ATF (Dexron) in my stock '08 TC96 with good results.

I put B&M in my primary, drained it after one mile. Just could not accept the additional noise. My primary is much quieter with 20w50.

FIrst post on the board other than the new members area and a couple of album pics. I hope I can add some value so here goes.

I have just about tried them all-- motor oil, 75-90, HD formula, etc and the best for me by far has been Dexron III in the stock FLHT and Type F in the Stage 3 FLSTN.

The type F hooks up quickly where the Dexron III is very smooth. Not a bit of slip with the DIII and works well for me.
I don't think you need Syn in there, but whatever you prefer is fine with me.

One mile? Do you think you might have some mechanical issues that are being masked by the thicker 20w50??
