primary oil comsumption
I have a 05 softail classic that uses about 15-20 oz of primary oil each 1000 miles or so.....i had the 5000 mile service done on it and 1000 miles later had to add about 20 oz....have also had to do that in the past....is this norma comsuption or should i be concerned....doesnt seem to pose a problem with shifting, clutch operation etc

RE: primary oil comsumption
i guess my real question is should i EVER have to add oil.....my owners manual instructs me to check the level each month....with that in mind it seems that HD is expecting to see a level change fairly often..... to elaborate on how i check level, i put it up on a lift after riding to get engine hot...after removing the derby cover i couldn.t see an oil level even when shining a flashlight.....so i poured in oil until i could see it about even with the clutch spring.....does all of that sound right? obviously a novice at these things, looking for some more helpful feedback...been good so far,,, thanks

RE: primary oil comsumption
Since adding the oil yourself, have you had to add any more oil. ?
If you answer no to this question, I suggest the answer is obvious. The dealer drained your oil and forgot to re-fill it....
DOH........another dealer Homer moment............??????????????????????
Do your own fluids..........you will know its done, save cash, and know for sure what type of oil you have used.
If you have never done anything like an oil change before, make sure you know all the torque settings, and if in doubt ask on this site, you will get a lot of good info from the guys and gals on here.
I have never posted a question that someone couldnt answer for me.
