Default 76 Harley FXE Shovelhead Dry Clutch

I'm having a problem with an oil leak....duh! Am replacing clutch and there seems to be a leak coming from clutch hub bearing into the clutch basket. Causes very jerky starts. Cleaned clutch plates with brake cleaner. Dried off with compressed air and clutch is silky smooth. In no time, same problem!

Any ideas on what/where to check?????

Any help is appreciated.

Do your metal clutch plates have "out " stamped on them ? That oil might be trany fluid coming out the trany main shaft ?

Thanks for your input.

The plates are marked "out" and I have them in the right direction, new seals throughout the transmission, including the clutch release rod nut on the main shaft. Oil appears to be coming through clutch hub bearing into the clutch basket. That's the only place I can see any seepage at all.

Some oil--about 1/4 cup--in the primary case due to chain oiler which is located in the primary case.

Still using same old clutch, just cleaning with brake cleaner. Will change clutch disc and steel plates to make sure oil is NOT coming out of the fiber discs when heated.

That may be my problem....will check to see and check back in here.

If you have any other suggestions, will greatly appreciate.

This is a good one! The only lub on this dry clutch system is on the rollers (grease )that go onto the clutch hub (inside the cage )

What's the condition of the chain sprocket off the trany ? Does this primary still have the primary oil return system or was it blocked off ?

Primary chain oiler is still on there and it still works. I think MOST of my problem is with old clutches that have had oil on them before I started working on the bike. Going to replace clutches and hope THAT cures the problem.

Thanks for the help.
