Default Police Bike Gearing

I had heard cop bikes have a different final gear ratio than civilian bikes. Other than counting teeth, is there a way to come up with the final gearing using MPH &RPM??
When I'm at 70MPH the tach reads 3000RPM, at 60 its 2600 or close and at 80 it's about 3400( hard to count tics on the tach and keep an eye on the road)
SM says 5th has 3.15 ratio on Touring Bikes, what RPM's are the civilian bikes at at these speeds??
TIA

My '03 ultra tach"s 2900 rpm @ 70 mph, and 2500 at 60 mph. So I guess the difference is just the tach readings. You would think that a bike that would be used in a town that was mostly city streets and traffic, would be geared differently then a bike that would be used mostly on the highway.,,

I posted this in your other thread. 03 is 3.15. the police bikes switched from 3.27 to 3.15 in 01 or 02 whenever the other fi bikes switched. I am a motor and when they switched it was like the bikes lost 10-15 ft/tq of torq. 3000 at 70 indicates 3.15. always lots of rumors about police bikes having diff cams etc. I believe the pre T/C bikes had some diff. upgrades but from 99 on up thru 06 no diff. In 07 they came with 103's and oil coolers.

Yep got that post, thanks to both of you!! Tons of rumors about police bikes with this and that extra added, so now I know gearing, I've got to decide whether to change gearing to 3.27 or just add the TW21 or 26, I'm leaning to the 21 because I've hardly had this bike over 4500 and want good low end grunt

2000 FI, Cop Bike. In 2000 the FI models had 3:37 gearing, carb models had 3:15. Mine runs 3000 rpm @ 70 mph. 3:15's will run right around 275/300 rpm slower @ 70 mph.

All '99-01 FI Touring bikes, not just police models, have 3:37 gearing. I ride a 2003 EG at work. I hate the 3:15 gearing compared to my personal bike's 3:37.

Hmmmm yours runs 3000@70 with 3.37 gearing and mine does too,and now I'm pretty sure it's 3.15 final. Thats the only speed I'm sure of 'cause the needles are right on the numbers.

xxx...on the bright side...part of your job is riding.lol

I couldn't decide which cam to choose, so I am letting the gearing decide for me. 3.37, I would have picked the tw26....looks like i'm gonna go with the tw21 and leave the gearing alone ,until i need to take the primary off.

When you pull the primary count the teeth. 24/37 is what the FI models run for gearing, 3:37. If you count 25/36 you're running 3:15. I wish I had the 3:15's instead of the 3:37's and would gladly swap the gears with someone that's close enough to knock it out in an afternoon.

I don't want to swap but I have a set of 3.15 gears in excellent condition that I'd sell at a reasonable price. PM me if interested.

Although I ride a Softail which is lighter than yours I've done a fair amount of experimentation with primary gearing. I've run factory 3.15, 3.37 & one set in between at different times. I don't have a tach. But I can tell you the 3.15 set is considerably slower around town than the 3.37 set.

I recently went on an over 2000 mile trip with the 3.37 hitting interstates & local county roads & like it better even at high speeds. More snap. Engine is fairly modified & got 42 mpg for the whole trip. I'd try gearing before cams first, having been down both roads. Good luck.
