Sheared Diaphragm Spring Retainer Bolt
While trying to install a new diaphragm spring from an easy clutch I sheared off one of the 6 bolts houlding the spring retainer. It sheared up inside the clutch hub where they screw in. I am not a mechanic but tackle some small jobs. How difficult is it to remove/replace the clutch hub and do I need any special tools to do it? Also what size is the mainshaft nut?
Btw I do have a service manual...
Thanks, Mike

The nut is 1-3/16". You must also remove the compensator nut, as the clutch and primary chain and compensator are removed at the same time, unfortunately you can`t just slip off the primary chain. The compensator nut is 1-1/2" (standard right hand thread).
Important: Check your service manual carefully regarding the clutch hub nut, older bikes had left hand thread but somewhere along the line they went to standard right hand threads. Make sure...
A new hub is very expensive...
Before you buy a new hub, I suggest you remove it and take it to a machine shop, machine repair shop, automotive machine shop, 4x4 shop etc, they will be able to remove the broken bolt. A good machine repair guy can work magic.
Don`t bring it to a motorcycle shop.

My friend came by and after clamping the clutch so it would not turn he used a ultra small screwdriver and a hammer to tap it out. Took him maybe 45 seconds. It was at least 1/4 " up inside the threads. He said that so long as the bolt or screw did not bottom out this works sometimes... I was impressed. Could not get him to take a dollar. Gave him the old chrome caliper/dic brake covers I had stored... I was very happy. Had to order the dang screws as the dealer near me did not have them in stock nor did their other dealership... They never seem to have what I need. Oh well maybe next weekend...
