Unfortunately, HD is no different than other motorcycle manufacturers. See the attached link for a class action lawsuit against Honda regarding a problem with the Goldwing GL1800. Same responses from dealers, service personnel and the manufacturers.

Hopefully HD will step up and set themselves apart from the Japanese manufacturers and won't let it go that far.............

my wife just purchased a 2007 heritage classic. The tranny sounds good, no different than my 02 fatboy except for the 6th gear. But this is a softail. The only abnormal sound I can here sounds like the primary hammering when going to slow for the gear i'm in. It gos away when I downshift.

I got to spend some time with MOCO factory personnel at the Drag Races Saturday. They had a nice two story tent out there with all the '07's lined up as well as some customs and motor clothes. I talked to a sportster rep, a touring rep, and finally a tech service rep. I was told that Harley's upper management is aware of the issue and is taking a serious look. The big deal right now is that there have been no breakdowns and it is not considered a safety issue. If this is true, then as a manufacturer's rep myself and have dealt with some of these types of problems, this will have to be handled as a customer satisfaction issue. That means that we must continue to complain that we aren't satisfied with the product.
I asked him what to tell the dealer concerning the noise when I take it in for service and they try to give me the straight vs helical cut gear nonsense. He told me to suggest that the dealer contact Harley Tech support. They have recommended that folks put FORMULA + in the transmission, but as we have seen from this thread that does little good. Also, he also mentioned that the dealers should be getting another tech note from Harley this week concerning this issue. He wouldn't (couldn't) tell me what it was about. So maybe we see something this week, maybe not. I wish I had gotten his card........

PS Went 200 miles today in the Tx Hill Country. Sure 5th gear sounded really bad, but a great day nonetheless!

It was too much tequila or not quite enough.

Thats the million dollar question everyone has.I was led to believe its in the last stages of the build. When motor and trans is mated to primary. The alignment of these two components due to ever slight differences between every bike, every, trans, every motor. Some trans have been changed and cured problem, some didnt.I was also told the comp spring was the cause. The factory has duplicated this noise but are dumb founded as why,or fast fix.Why do they keep the ones of us with problems in the dark?Keep lying to us?Feeding everyone the same old line?

to answer your last question Pitguy,,,,, I read HD just changed there stock symbol from HDI to HOG, that and the announcement of tying in with Lehman trikes-[I think} their stock is on a a steep increase,,,, they are on a uphill ride, and are probs would be thier "wrench in the gears" so to speak,,, jus my opinion

I just got off my bike,Bunch of short hops,no hwy, alot of stop, park, get back on rides.Bike never made a peep, even 5th gear wasnt as loud. This thing has got to be hot to act up.A long hwy ride seems to do it everytime.Thats what will give me the slap, rattle sound. Its not the sound of say rod knocking, but more like primary chain slap.Yet my last hwy ride the slap was heard and later overcome by valvetrain noises. Its there in 5th but real hard to hear with other surrounding noises.6th gear is the most easiest for it to be heard. This is not lugging. It will do it above 70 mph as well, but then again it depends on wind and other surround sounds. The bike never quit today.Oil pressure was just shy of 60 when cold and around 38to 40 while moving. 15 to 18 at idle.Tach is jumping somewhat at red lights but no feeling of stalling. This must be what my dealer seen.I plan on getting this noise on tape when it occurs so the powers to be wont think Im full of it.
