My opinion is that both options fix the problem but in different ways. The Baker F6F changes the gearing (slightly higher RPM for a given MPH). By slightly gearing down, the power impulses are suppressed ................. in a manner similar to remaining in a lower gear. The added benefit of the Baker is that you also eliminate the gear whine problem in 5th by introducing helical cut gears. Sounds excellent!
The IDS simply absorbs the drive shock waves at the rear wheel preventing them from beingreflected back into the tranny. I think the gear lash andpower impulses together, result in the clatter. The IDS does nothing to eliminate the 5th gear whine (who cares about that?). The beast is the clatter problem.
Respectfully: wrong. F6F does not change gearing at all. Just replaces spur 5th w/helical. Baker [and Andrews] does offer pulleys w/fewer teeth which will change gearing, but these are not included in the F6F kit. If your opinion were correct, my bike would be clattering now, because I did not change pulleys and therefore did not lower the gearing. I'm not sure what the IDS does, but I just swapped to a helical 5th and I have no whine or clatter. I have said all along that it is simply a problem with the 5th gear set. Lets see, it's totally silent in 1-4 and 6, and whines and clatters in 5th. So you slap a cush drive on the rear wheel. Can't hurt, but I'm skeptical.
Thanks for the clarification .................more gen for those guys trying to decide which way to jump, eh?
I wonder if the Baker fix and IDS will work together. I wonder if the IDS sprocket and stock sprocket have the same number of teeth. Might be a good combination.

Lot's of complaints of noise but don't hear much about breakage, anybody know how these noisy things are holding up? That sounds funny, complaining about a noisy Harley

Of course they do have the same number of "teeth", and of course they'd work well together. I'm reluctant to call either a "fix" though. One is a different engineering choice and the other is an additional one.

Something must be FUBAR. Can one of you fine folks grab the powers-that-be's attention for me? I can't seem to get through. Thanks
Nope, no failures. Hence, no problem. The reason why I'm not afraid to tour on it.
Not a problem, but a huge issue.
Noisy Harley? Sure in years past, but this is 2007. If your gonna build a new rig, why wouldn't you engineer it to be the best it can be? Why would you allow a "bad noise" into your new build? Surely by now you've seen the latest Harley commercial that ends something like "note by Harley" speaking of course of the exhaust note. If you were going to use that as your trademark, why wouldn't you want that to be what everyone hears and associates with your product? Riddle me that Batman!
If you bought a car with a factory turbocharger and it sounded like a bearing was coming apart and was so loud you couldn't hear the radio you would take it back? What if the manufacturer told you that was normal? Would you live with it? Would you say, "oh toyota/mitsubishi/nissan said it's not a problem" to your friends who want to know what in the h3ll that noise is???
Nope, not a problem, but a huge issue that Harley has chosen to deal with via the IDS, so now the factory has (in not so many words) admitted that it aint right.
I rode a 2008 for about 45 minutes today. It makes the exact same noise as mine. So officially I'm now saying that I'm freaking crazy. I'm going to get the IDS installed with next tire change, but I have no hope that anything is going to change in the "tranny noise" complaint department (definition of insanity comes into play here). But at this point, I don't really care anymore. The big bore kit allows me to cruise comfortably in 6th at 65mph so I can pretty much skip 5th. I've got $30k in the bike at this point, it runs great, it's extremely comfortable to ride for 10-12 hours a day. There is only one down side and I'm not going to worry about it anymore.
If you want to buy a 2008, feel free to contact HornyToad HD in Temple, Tx. They have bent over backwards to help me with this - so great service. You can also ride any bike there BEFORE you buy it which is a good thing to do with this new tranny.
Sorry for the long post, just a little down after todays experience....
Ahh, if it was a Harley Davidson car then it would not be a problem,it would be a "characteristic" of the car and be normal (even though it is not on all the units).
Not only that.... the other owners of the HDcars would give you shit for even thinking there was a "problem" with the "normalnoise"and you must be ananti-American communistor something to evenutter such a blasphemy again such a fine upstanding, god fearing, company!
Not only that, it is notHD's auto fault, it is a government conspiracy headed by theEPA and CIAto take down the lastsymbol American of freedom!

TR: Could you confirm that the bike you rode was fitted with the Isolated Drive? Thanks in advance.

I've been following this thread since I bought my 07 Road King last September hoping to find an answer to the clatter problem. After seeing all the positivefeedback about theIDS, I ordered one andinstalled it last week. IT WORKS! I'm now clatter free. Thanks everyone for keeping this thread going and for finally finding something that really solves the problem.
