I never really thought about that. I've always done it with the trannie i neutral. Less drag on things?

There's no drag if nothing's spinning.

Frankly, it's too embarrassing to share the cause and solution. If I did share, I'm afraid everyone here would be dumber for having read it. Suffice it to say that: 1) the Doc Harley method worked flawlessly; and 2) I am an idiot.

At least you're honest. Most of us here aren't.
I always get a kick out of those rebuilding their motors etc. with just the internet.
"Get a manual"; truer words were never spoken.
