Default '04 Softail Std. Trans Main Bearing install

Can this bearing install be done with the 5 speed trans in the bike or does the trans have to be removed? If it can be installed while trans is in the bike, can it be installed without special tools by freezing the bearing before install?

Thanks

If you mean the big ball bearing that supports the main drive gear, yes it can be replaced with the trans case in the frame.

In order to remove the bearing you must first remove the gearset and the main drive gear.

You can remove and install the bearing without special tools, but you will need some special tools to remove the gearset and the main drive gear...

Yes, you can remove and install the bearing itself without any special tools other than a piece of lumber and a mallet...

But you will need special tools in order to remove the gearset and the main drive gear, which you will have to remove first.

Thank you Dan--Can you tell me what tools I will need in order to remove the gearset and the main drive gear?? I have the tools to remove the clutch basket nut, the mainshaft bearing race and the large mainshaft nut holding the drive pully on.
Thanks

You can see these tools on Georges Garage website, they have the best prices on special tools, and ship very fast. Tool numbers in parenthesis.

You must have a Shop Manual.

Locking device to immobilize the primary sprockets in order to loosen the compensator nut and clutch nut. (580040)

A special socket to remove the pulley nut.(620030)

Puller to remove the primary bearing inner race from the mainshaft. (620060)

Puller to remove and install main drive gear and bearing. (620070)

Now I have a question:
How do you know the bearing is bad???

I don't know that the main bearing is bad but if I go in there , I am going to replace it as it is the most likely to have been damaged by tightening instead of loostening the mainshaft drive pully nut with a 3/4 inch breaker bar and 6 feet of pipe on the breaker bar. I do have a manual and followed the directions BUT the nut would not loosten so I tried the oposite direction and ended up over tightening the drive pully nut when I heard a metal sharp "tink" sound. I won't know till I get into it but at the cost of the bearings , it is foolish not to replace them all while I have it apart. Just my thoughts.

I`ll bet the sound you heard was a failure of the main drive gear when you overtightened the nut...

Thank you Dan--More will be revealed once I get in there. Found few but some fine metal shavings in the tranny oil when I just changed it (500 miles since overtightened the nut). Symptom prompting disassembly is hard to shift from 1st to 2nd sometimes --clutch adjusted perfectly and new cable with play adjusted to 1/8". Still shifts hard sometimes. When I heard that "tink" sound while trying to loosten (but really tightening) the pully mainshaft nut, I knew I did something in there.
