Default Stripped splines on shift lever shaft

I know I can't be the first with this problem. Have a '06 Street Glide with the toe/heel shifter. The toe shifter has ruined the splines on the shifter shaft. Is this a DIY project or do you have to remove the primary case and such?

I have seen a few threads that state "take the levers off and the shaft slides right out". I have looked at mine and the shaft slides out the back (toward the engine) and makes contact with the engine long before sliding out.

Am I missing something? Hopefully someone has done this repair and can provide me with experienced guidance and advice.

Thanks for any advice, help & support.
