Default Still Leaking

2 winters ago I replaced the main bearing, the race , seals and all on my 1996 Wide Glide. Spring came and the leak came back, this spring I have taken it apart again and replaced the main seal agian because it looked like it was running out of it and down the back side only when it was on the kick stand. There was fluid down the seal when i got the inner off so I replaced it. 3 days it sat on the lift after I drove it for about 15 miles (no leaks) took it of the lift and back to the lean of the kickstand and wala the the has appeared agian runnig from the back side down. ?? is it possible that the race was not the right size?? any other reasons that it could come out the seal. The fit of the seal was not real tight but snug?? anyone out there have any ideas??

Did you replace the spacer and the quad seal?

Dan, not sure what ering to as the quad seal, I replaced the main bearing, the race for the main bearing to ride on and the seal between the inner primary and the tranny.

I thought when you said main bearing you meant the big oil seal on the ball bearing on the transmission.

If the leak is only showing up when the bike is leaning toward the left side, it is probably not the primary, since when the bike is on the jiffy stand, the primary oil level would actually be lower on the side of the primary where the seal is.

I bet you are leaking transmission lube, and my guess is it is leaking from the oil seal that goes inside the main drive gear. This seal seals the space between the mainshaft and the main drive gear.

But if you have the inner primary cover off, it is not a bad idea to replace all the seals while you are there.

Main drive gear oil seal
Pulley spacer
Quad seal (underneath the pulley spacer)
Big oil seal
Shifter shaft oil seal
Starter jackshaft oil seal
Inner primary cover oil seal

Dan, The fluid seems to be accumulating inside the sprocket that the belt rides on where the tranny shaft comes through. We thought that it might be comming from the tranny side so we took it off the lift and let it set on the kick stand for a couple days, no fluid came from around the shaft. It seems like when I ride it the fluid will pool maybe in that sprocket so to speak and then drain when i lean it. ?? I will look around that seal on the shaft again. Are they hard to change? Thanks agian

Here are a couple of pics of the main drive gear and the oil seal.

Not too difficult to replace, just thread a couple of small sheet metal screws into the seal and then grab the screws with a pliers and pull it out.

Just try to keep the screws in the center of the seal, so they don`t scratch up the shaft or the gear.

I`m not too good at posting pictures, couldn`t figure out how to make them show up bigger...
