Another clutch problem
Hi All
I have a 2005 Road King with 26000 miles. I replaced the stock clutch with a SE clutch also replaced Clutch cable at the same time. The problem is that I adjust clutch as per manual and it seem to me that the clutch grabs way too far out. I have adjusted it several time with a really light touch and with a normal touch on the screw still the same thing. When its hot it is worse (the grab is even farther out when releasing the clutch lever). Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm leaving for Maine in 3 weeks.

Interesting but to me more slack in the cable is what is causing your problem if I understand you correctly. Just a thought if AJ's idea does not work. First make sure you have 1/8 or more free play in the cable. Then with bike warm, adjust the Allen screw in till all play is gone and turn in a couple extra turns more to deburr thread. Then set it back to no play and back off 1/2 turn or so and work the clutch in and out while you screw in touching till you really realize there is no play. The back off 3/4 turn to 1 turn. Then lock the locknut holding Allen screw. Not too tight since torque is in inch lbs. Note that 1/2" back off gives you the most gap in the plates and 3/4-1 gives you little less. 1/2" gives you the least bang going into low from a cold start if you pull in the clutch and hold it in 60 seconds or so (lot less then red light). Now set the cable play at the minimum free play tolerance (1/16") Be sure to check at both lock point of the handle bars. Set this way, the clutch will start grabbing quicker as you let lever out.

Thanks Chester and Ripsaw. I have tried 1/2 turn and 3/4 turn and the only difference is 1/2 turn my bike does not move when I start it in gear. The 3/4 turn the bike moves a little when I start it in gear, this is when the bike is cold. I did what AJ suggested and it seems to work. I am going to adjust it again this weekend to see.
