Default Install trans gears

I recently had to replace my main drive gear in my 96 wide glide (don't ask) Anyway... I go to try install the rest of the gears for the trans, and I can't get them to go.

Is there some sort of trick, or technique that am I am missing here?

edit: Just to clarify, the main drive gear is already installed in the case. I am having issues with the 5 speed gear set not going in.

I looked to see if the dogs on the gears were causing some sort of issue, they weren't. I even removed the main drive gear itself to see if the teeth didn't mesh with the 5th gear, they are.

When it came out, it was really easy to remove. Leading me to believe that it is not a press fit.

Any ideas?

I spoke with Gary from Andrews yesterday. He said that from 95 on, that the gears are a matched set. Meaning that if you replace the main drive gear for example, you MUST replace the corresponding countershaft gear as well.

Damn HD has you by the ***** on this stuff!

The gears are not matched from the factory, they wear into each other. Depending on the miles, I may or may not replace the matching gear, and have had no problem.

You may be having problems getting the counter shaft into it's bearing, I've slipped them right in and other times struggle to get it lined up. Take your time and don't force it.
Good luck

Depending on what year you are talking about, there are different gears that are not interchangeable, so they must be replaced as a set.

There may be different gears, but there are no gears the are machined as a "matched set". Matching a gear set would be more like cam and crank gear where you use an over or under sized pinion to set the correct gear clearance. There are no gears in the tranny like that.

Apparently, Andrews (which is my mainshaft gear manufacturer) goes with the matched set theory.

I contacted Andrews about it, and Gary (from Andrews) told me that after 95, HD went with the matching gearset deal.

Suffice it to say, when a mainshaft gear is replaced, the corresponding countershaft gear must be replaced as well.

When you buy these two gears are you buying one part number or two?

Not all 5 speed gears are the same, over the years there have been changes to the gear design, you cannot mix one type with the other.

Not a matched set, but you must use mating gears of the same configuration.
