finding neutral

finding neutral
ok here's the problem as best as I can describe it. Well, first off the engine and trans are out of an 80 FLT. I cant seem to find neutral and it shifts hard into first and second. I adjusted the clutch cable at the trans and at the cable adjuster via the book. Still not resolve, I do notice a small lurch sometimes when I am sitting at a stop sight or light. Any insight would be awesome.

My 1990 bike is obviously newer than yours, but I also have similar difficulty. Only on much later bikes have Harley come up with a better set-up. By all means adjust at the clutch as per the book, but what I do with my bike is to remove very nearly all the slack in the cable. I also replaced the original cable with a Diamondback, which is much smoother and lighter in operation and helped neutral selection a little. The other thing is to engage neutral while still rolling. If you are in the habit of stopping while in a high gear, try changing down through the box, when you can!

If you are having the bike lurch while stopped then your clutch is not adjusted correctly. The best way to engage neutral is while the bike is still rolling. The bike should never creep or lurch while you have the clutch lever pulled all the way in. That should tell you to go back to square one and start over. Later Fairshake
