Default Adjusting shifter linkage

OK, so I will be the first to admit I am new to the Harley experience, but been riding since I was 16 and handy with wrenches. Bought my 2008 Heritage Softail at a Daytona HD, and within a day, experienced shifting troubles. Wouldn't shift easily to the next gear, either up or down, and neutral was a bitch to find, even with the engine off. Went back to the service dept., they dinked at it for a few seconds and said yeah, needs adjusted, have it to you in 1/2 hour. They fixed it OK, and I was so happy to be out riding again I never thought to ask how they did it... they said that when you bring your bike in for service we check that sort of stuff. I got nothing against them making a buck, but I already have gathered the needed supplies to do my own lube changes, etc... I prefer to do my own wrenching whenever possible. Anyone out there shed any light on the art/science involved in this adjustment, and is it common to need to be tweaked? I guess I need to pick up the service manual!

Thanks,

Clutch adj. Look under the DIY section. Manual also will walk you through. You Tube is another option. Pretty simple 30 minute job if you take your time.
