Removing input/output shaft seal?

Removing input/output shaft seal?
I've read the threads saying to use a small screwdriver, insert in the soft rubber, and pry toward the 'copper' area. .but I feel like I'm still doing it wrong.
Here's what it looks like now:
And here's what I'm working with:
At first I was sticking the screwdriver between the input shaft at 12 o'clock and trying to pry upwards but I wasn't getting any leverage that way, and was prying against the shaft so stopped that pretty quick. Then I tried going along the side, at 3 o'clock, and prying upwards, avoiding touching the shaft. That seems to work better but I'm just messing up the seal.
Any advice? Keep going with the 3 o'clock method? Get a different tool?
Worried about nicking the main drive gear when doing it this way. .is that/should that be a concern?
Matt

Some guys use run a screw or two into the seal and then pull on the screw with pliers. I have never tried this method, because whenever I have gone as far as removing the inner primary bearing from the mainshaft, I remove the gearset (I don`t do this to make a living, so I`m in no hurry).
