Default Nother clutch question

Hello again.....
Trying to get my clutch adjusted and having one hell of a time. I watched several videos and read a few posts. I have a 87 sportster 883 with apes and the previous owned replaced the clutch cable but didn't adjust it after. I locked down the cable and opened up where the screw adjustment is. I went in til loose and a few extra, then backed it off til it started to grab. Then I went in 1/4 turn. Clutch still slipped. It grabs, but if you punch it it slips. I tried coming out 1/2 or a little more from when it was getting tight and still does the same.
Clutch shot? Or maybe I am doing something wrong????
Thanks again for any input..

try backing off the cable before you adjust the clutch. then take out the slack in the cable after turning the adjuster screw a 1/4 turn and put the nut and spring back in place.

then adjust the cable.

hope this helps.

Thanks for the input. By backing off the cable, do you mean don't tighten all the way so the adjusters are touching?
I made it so the adjusters were touvhing, then did the 1/4 out, then put the spring and nut back in, then adjusted the cable.
Should I try with the cable adjusters not touching, if so how far out?
I hope I am not making you guys smack your heads on something saying this guy is something else
I am really trying...

Nope. Didn't smell burnt. Smelled like oil.
Here is what I did.
Closed the adjuster all the way. When I did the lever was about a/2 limp.
Then I loosened up the adjust screw in the case all the way out. There was no slack in the cable. Then I backed out the screw until I saw it bottom out and felt a little pressure. Went in about 1/4 turn. Now the clutch lever was still about 1/2 loose. I put the lock nut and spring back on and backed out the canle about an inch and a half ( to where there was about 1/4 inch play in the cable when pulling out of the lever housing.
I also checked the clutxh itself on the inside and when the lever was out the clutch was all the way out meaning it should be grabbing all the way.
Still slips.
