I took the 02 FXST for a ride yesterday, everything was running fine. After about a half hour I shifted into 4th gear and I hear a loud whine. I shifted back into third and it went away. It had me worried so I took it on the highway and shifted up. 3rd was fine. 4th had a loud whine and 5the was fine. So that told me it was only in 4th. Not sure what it could be. I searched a lot of the posts and find that this is normal for a 5 speed but it still has me worried because it’s pretty loud. Anyone know what this could be?

Never heard of "normal gear whine" on a 5 speed before this. You did of course check your tranny fluid?

 

Thanks Stiggy, I haven't had a chance to look deeper into it but I'll check that tonight. I should know better than to assume anything but I just got the bike about 3 weeks ago and was told all the service was up to date.

 

Finally had a chance to check it last night and it was way low. Ran to Mother Road Harley this morning and picked up some tranny fluid. Problem solved. Stiggy-Thanks for reminding me.

 

Yeah and Thanks, but is the whine gone? ( And since it was just "recently service" (?) I'd check everything else!)
