Just had my bolt back out this the primary chain was not connecting the engine to the transmission. Had lunch with a friend at bike Week and his did the same thing just a few days earlier.

Is this a problem? I have a Dyna and he has an ultra. Is this something that should be checked on a regular basis?

 

Not normal. Clean it up, use red Loctite and torque to spec.

 

clean it real good too or you'll be doing it again. I found that out.

 

How did you figure that out? Was it making noise or what?

 

There was no indication of a problem until this, As I was approaching a red signal light I started slowing and clutched to gear down. When I released the clutch the primary chain was grinding in the primary housing and not connecting with the transmission. As I coasted to a stop at a convenience store, I tried to crank the bike. The starter would turn over but there was no connection via the chain to turn the engine over. Trailered it to Hellfighter's MC shop. Primary case was opened and problem was exposed. Loctite applied and bolt was re-torqued to spec. So far no problems after 1500 miles.

On the internet I have discovered this to be a problem on some HD bikes.

 

Mine was making a banging noise similar to a loose chain slap. That's how I found out you have to clean the threads of the crank and nut real good before loctite. I think I overdid the reed loctite though Because i could hardly get it loose the next time I had to take it apart.

 

did you heat the nut to loosen the red locktite?
