Default Questions regarding transmission

I have a '77 Shovelhead with a 4 speed transmission. It was stuck in second gear so we took out the trans to inspect. I can easily move the countershaft gears in and out of the main gears however when I do and try to turn the main shaft the gears lock up. Is this supposed to happen? Also, what would I be looking for that would cause it to lock in gear?

I had a bent fork in a 76 that needed replacement. Since you got it apart I'd look for an indy shop that knows 4 speeds. I went with Andrews parts and gears and the tranny is probably still good.

I don't know what part of Florida you are in but you can go see Wayne and Jeff down at Southern V-twin in Melbourne if you are close. They still work on the old iron. I agree with paguy it could be a fork. The forks were pretty thin on the 4 speeds.
