i am changing my drive belt and i am trying to get the clutch hub off the shaft. it just doesnt want to come off the shaft it seems that it may have a burr on the end of the shaft it moves a little but it wont budge when it gets to the end of the shaft also do i have to take the compensating sprocket off to get the inner primary cover off?. anyone got any suggestions to get the hub to slide off?? thanks in advance for any info and help! i also noticed a retaining ring that was inside the hub when i backed the nut off??
any ideas on that?? i have a factory manual but it did not say anything about a retaining ring in there.

the compensator, clutch and chain should all come off together,as stated in your manual. There is a puller designed to remove your clutch.

 

mark i am working on a 98 evo and the hub should just slide off. but my new problem is the clutch hub seems to be stuck on the shaft and i cant pry it off .it will slide to the end of the splines but there must be some kind of burr on the end and it wont slide off and i don't want to damage anything getting it off and i was told not to use a clutch hub puller because the hub was aluminum and not steel as the old ones where.i thought about using a big 3 jaw puller and grabbing the ring gear and pushing on the shaft but am still not crazy about that either anyone got any ideas?

If you believe the splines are mushroomed take a small triangle file to them, you're going to have to clean them up when you get the clutch off anyway.

 

so i got the hub off and the shaft had a burr on the end of the spline....maybe because i turned the nut the wrong way to start and mashed a burr at the end of the shaft form the start???? i used a big 3 jaw puller and grabbed the ring gear and put some(very little) pressure on the hub shaft and with 2 bars worked it off gently from behind the gear and after further inspection of the belt that was the only tare and was only 1/4 long......man i feel like i should have let it ride for all the work to get it off.what do you guys think?do i need to do anything to the stator while in there or anything else for that matter??
and how about the best bang for your buck on the belt?
