Default Inner primary starter seal direction?

I'm replacing all the seals in my 2002 FLTR inner primary. I have a James gasket/seal kit and the starter shaft seal has a protrusion on one side with a spring on the outside diameter. I'm trying to make sense of the manual but it's exploded view is useless. I removed all the seals to clean it but it's been a while and I don't remember how the old one was installed. Does the protrusion go toward the starter(inboard) or toward the outer primary (outboard)?

I've been searching for two hours and nobody mentions anything about this seals installation.

The "protrusion" which would be the side with the little spring visible on most seals goes to the clutch side of the primary.

The spring always goes to the pressure or wet side.

Thanks for the quick reply. This seal has got two springs and lips. One sticks out and the other is internal, hence my confusion. I think it's different than the original.

If you just set it in there, you'll see that the "protrusion" will fit nicely through the smaller potion of the hole where the seal goes into the primary. Take a small seal driver and tap it in....Don't whack it too hard.

That's what I was looking for! Thanks a lot Greezey! The book was saying to put the spring toward the clutch side but the stock seal is different than the James one. What you said makes sense and was what I started to do and then I remembered what my training has taught me, never assume anything!

Cheers!

Service Bulletin M-1161 says to install the seal with the open side of the seal toward the clutch, which means the protrusion goes toward the outside of the primary cover.
