Default running chain to loose?

I'm on a bike trip and have noticed that in first gear low rpm my chain is snapping real bad. Also is bad in 2nd gear when decelerating. This tells me my chain is to loose???
It is on an 07 Ultra and has an auto chain tensioner. I don't have the tools, new gasket or oil to inspect. It seems to run without any issues when traveling in any other than first gear.
If I run it with a loose chain will it cause any damage?
I'm in the middle of no where right now.
Any thoughts?

Sounds like you don't have a choice, run it, and when you get back throw that auto adjuster in the trash.

Ya your right............Just hope it doesn't jump a cog,,,,,,,,I'll deal with that if it happens I guess.

Seen some threads about a "hayden" adjuster. Are these auto tensioner's?

Hayden has a couple different models I believe. Here is our manual version, tried and true:
