Default Is Harley dealership lying to me about part?

I recently found I was leaking primary fluid from my primary chain inspection cover on my 2010 xl883n. And found that the actual outer primary cover had a huge crack in it where the inspection cover bolt meets the primary cover. I looked on ebay for a replacement outer primary cover and found an 04 cover for fifty dollars. It looks identical to the 2010 cover. So, I call Harley and ask how much a 2010 cover would be, and they say $270. Then I asked if an 04 cover would fit on my bike and they said no way. Is he telling me the truth? the 2004 and 2010 covers look identical except for the color. Would anyone happen to know if I would be able to use an 04 outer primary cover on a 2010 iron?

Lying?

They call for different part numbers in the parts catalog.

Do you think they keep track of what parts can be interchanged?

An independent shop may use different year parts on a bike, but a dealership will use the part called out in the parts catalog.

It`s got nothing to do with lying.

But some people need to throw out disparaging remarks about dealers whenever they can.

I tried to out a 09 cover on my 04 and all is the same except the hole for the shifter shaft. The 09 is a fatter shifter shaft.

Ask for the part #, then go to www.surdyke.com, punch it in and see how much it costs from them.

HAHAHA! If you think any type of oil is put into a 2010 sporty outer primary cover, please don't respond. Because you obviously have no idea what you are talking about.
