Default Primary Chaincase Noise

I have a 2007 street glide with 20,000 miles on it. Recently I have noticed some mechanical noise coming from the chain case. It's more prevalent when it's in neutral. When I pull the clutch in it stops and when I let it out the sounds comes back. It sounds like a rotating noise. I have changed the chain case fluid and adjusted the clutch to manual specs...any idea what it could be?

The compensator would be the first thing I would check, then move on to the inner primary race/bearing and then the clutch hub bearing.

I'll put a vote in for the inner primary bearing.

Try this:

Engine running, bike in neutral, clutch lever released, you hear the noise.

Pull in clutch lever and drop into first gear, the noise stops.

That would indicate a bearing on the mainshaft, because when you drop the transmission into gear, the mainshaft stops turning.

Most likely culprit is the Inner Primary Bearing.

Neutral rattle, Harley will tell you it's normal. **** poor stack up tolerance on the gears, Harley sent a bulletin to their dealers telling them to tell customers it's normal. You can call corporate and complain but I doubt it will do much good.

Definitely your Inner Primary Bearing! Usually goes bad right at about 20,000 miles. About a $500 fix if you let dealer do it. Part is cheap. Cost is in the labor. I baby my 2010 96 twin cam, completely stock engine. Ran nothing but Amsoil and Red Line and changed every 3,000 miles. I bitched like crazy when mine went. HD mechanic told me his also went at 20,000 and that it happens to about 1 out of 5 twin cam engines. As far as I know the MoCo has never issued a recall on this problem. Get it done as soon as you can to prevent further damage.
