Default trouble shooting rattle

im trying to trouble shoot rattle on start up on my 2008 roadking classic cant seem to here where noise is coming from i was thinking lifters but dosnt sound like top end what i have read on forum so far im thinking maybe compensater also seems to shudder somtimes when pull in clutch and come to stop.noise went away last season then started up again. when i took it to mechanic last season it didnt make the noise but he suggested lifter replacement. anyway to tell where problem is before chasing it with new parts. oh ya bike has 21k kilometers

Engine stethoscope or makeshift stethoscope may narrow noise down to where it is coming from. Couldn't hurt to open things up and look, don't have to throw parts at it, just look and clean, etc. Stock comp still or SE?

Just ride it, when the noise becomes more consistent use a 3ft length of 5/8 heater hose as a stethoscope.
