Default 6speed clacking and whining

Just bought a 2007 Electra Glide Ultra Classic with 12K on the dial. I've read all the posts on all the forums about this "normal" condition. My question is what is the cause of this noise? Is the whine caused by loose gear mesh? Is the click-a-dee clacking caused by a poorly designed compensatory? Are there any remedies other than replacing these inferior designs?

Poor stack up tolerance, these gear sets were assembled on production lines by people who don't ride and don't give a ****. Ride it until it blows up then get one of these:

Why is the 6F6 no longer available?

We only purchased so many of the gear pairs from our manufacture, when they ran out the demand had seem to stop so we never reordered any. The bearing door is still available but the 5th gear pair is not.

That's a shame. It would be a cheaper fix.

I've got some TORCO racing gear oil 85W140 GL6. Would it be an improvement over the Redline Shock oil I'm using now? Would it quiet 5th gear a little? Not sure the Redline did anything for the noise.

5th gear only whine when you're on the throttle and not when you let off, why is that?

Thanks for all the info.

5th is a straight cut gear. Thats why it whines. Its a good noise.

I have no experience with a GL-6 fluid so I really can't answer that question. The 5th gear noise will only happen when torque is being applied because that is the only time the teeth are being forced to "slap" against each other.
