Accidental shift without clutch?
#11
I'll admit to a couple of times of having my heel over the lever and hitting a bump in the road and accidentally banging it into the next gear. Haven't done it in a while but the last time I did I nailed it twice on the same day.
Don't kid yourself you can fracture a bearing or chip a gear tooth, even bend a mainshaft being careless.
And speed shifting a bagger is not really an option. You have to back off the throttle at the right moment to take the load off the gearset in order to upshift. Downshifting is a bit easier waiting until you almost stall to drop it down another gear.
I used to speed shift my dirt bikes all the time but only twice on my Tour Glide. Once when I had a broken clutch cable and another time a fractured throw out bearing. I really should have trailered it home both times. Especially considering a dmagaed throw out bearing can easily loose rollers that can wind up in the tranny.

It is pretty hard to "chip a gear tooth" on a constant mesh tranny.
also very hard to "bend a mainshaft", or fracture a bearing. at idle
all that happens is the shifting dog jumps into the gear slot..
now that can cause a little wear on the mating surface.
it does cause a "******" in the drivetrain, and can cause you to lose your
balance....hmm I love the word "******"

I did fracture a countershaft bearing. And I've seen a broken tranny gear, and a damage mainshaft from a Harley tranny. And yes, none of it occurred at an idle.
