Default Inner Primary Race Removal Problem...

I started this project about 3 weeks ago to change the IPB and race on my 2007 FLHX with 21,000 miles on it. Seems the race has drifted in a bit. I have about .068 of a inch to get behind the race to try and pull it off. I busted the tool I bought to remove it, because I had to thin it down. I made one at work out of cold rolled steel, and that didn't work either. So..I guess I will have to use heat to expand it a bit and move it some to get a nice thick puller behind it. My concern is putting to much heat on it that will damage the shaft, which is hollow to some degree. Has anyone used heat on the race to move it? I'm very concerned about damage to the shaft. Also is there a race other than Harley that won't creep. I have a feeling that if I install the Harley replacement, the same problem will come back to haunt me....

A cutting wheel on a dremel tool.

Cut most of the way through the race, not all the way.

Put a chisel in the cut and tap with a hammer.

The race will crack and will then be loose on the shaft.

You can use Dan's method above just make sure you do not cut all the way through the race. Heat is another option it will not hurt the shaft, but there is a possibility of heating up the seal in the main drive gear too much. Both methods have been used successfully. Here is a better option then the two piece bearing and race set up:

I already boogerd up the mainshaft seal when the puller plate broke, so I have to replace that anyway... Thanks for the Baker High Torque Bearing Kit link.

There is a seal that goes into the end of the main drive gear, it seals the space between the main drive gear and the mainshaft, that is usually the one that will be damaged from excess heat. It is also the most commonly overlooked seal, people will chase a leak and tear down several times thinking they have replaced all the seals, but this one is missed.
