Pie-O-Neer Cafe, Pie Town, N.M.
Just saw a video on CBS News Sunday Morning. This looked like a fun place to ride to. Anybody been there?
How is the trip there? Any other attractions on the way there?

Good time of year to ride in New Mexico, Weather wise?

Been there several times as it's only a couple hours from the house.
It's cool, but I hope you enjoy very rural, rides getting there.. there ain't much else for miles
around except the Windmill Museum about 200 yards east of the Pie-O-Neer.
There's a nice little town west of there called Quemado and north of Quemado on the way back
out to I-40 and Gallup, Albuquerque, etc. you can hit El Malpais.. "The Bad Lands", a wild jumble of
square miles of lava that looks like something out of an apocalyptic movie.
Weather.... it's going to be all over the map. This week has been very good if cold around Albuquerque,
but nasty to the Northeast. Many of us ride all year 'round, but we never count on the weather very
far in advance..
FWIW

Used to live 22 miles from there. My last job before the USMC was building a community water line in Pie Town. The Pie at the Pie-O-neer really is good.
Dan Lee, who owns the windmill museum, worked with me and we are good friends.
From Pie Town go to Quemado then South to Apache Creek then back to Datil. Really pretty ride over Fox Mountain. From Quemado north through the Narrows to Grants is another great ride. Some people find the Very Large Array (Space Observation thingys) just east of Datil interesting.
The Eagle Guest Ranch in Datil used to be a good place to eat Mexican food. Don't know what it's like anymore.
Late May or June is a good time time ride in NM as is Sept and early Oct. July and August get a little warm and after the middle of Oct. things can start to get chilly.

I saw that same show Sunday. I too thought it was something interesting. But as MH said, not anything very close to it. Would be a bit out of the way to ride to from the Sante Fe or Ruidoso areas (two places on my bucket list). So I may never get to test one of those pies...

I've ridden through there several times. As has been said, it's pretty much in the middle on nowhere. Coming from the west, you have the mountains which then open up to a vast, high desert prairie. There are only a couple of small towns between Springerville AZ and Socorro, NM. About 45 miles west of Socorro, near Magdalena you find the VLA, home of the SETI Project. There are a bunch of huge radio telescopes spread out across the prairie. Excellent photo op. It's not a bad ride, just pretty desolate.

but I doubt I'd come from hundreds of miles away just to see the Pie-O-Neer..
