Since Geezr suggested you visit the Grand Canyon of PA & you already plan on York, here's 2 nearby places I stayed at this summer. Both were great.

*** Hill had 2 beds plus a fold out bed, kitchen with table & chairs ready to cook in, stove, microwave, toaster, refrigerator. Also picnic table outside.
Simple, old time motel, very clean & neat. There's a bar just to the west with great cheeseburgers.

The Red Caboose has 3 runs of RxR track with a variety of cabooses & other rail cars. Nice running model train setup (really geared to kids) and a good PA home-style restaurant in a dinning car. My room was half of an extra long caboose, good for 1 person only but neat & clean. The Strasburg Rail Road, Strasburg Train Shop and the Railroad Museum of PA are just across the corn field. Obviously this is best if you like old time railroad stuff.

From York to the falls, 83 up to 15 north. Then 6 west to 219 north.
I agree. I ride 219 into Ellicotville NY all the time. One of my favorite rides from my house. PA 6 is on my list for this year.

If you go through Ellicotville, great small town. Ski town in the winter, I suggest the Gin Mill, rest little bar/restaurant with an awesome burger. the "gin mill burger". There is a brewery in town is your into craft beers. Lots of nice places to stay if it were a place to stay, about an hour to hour and a half south if the falls.

Hey gchristopher --- Dinosaur BBQ in Syracuse. That's something to do between Boston & Buffalo! It's not far off 81, and only 4 or 5 miles south of the thruway, route 81 exit.

All these suggestions sound great, but remain flexible, don't make your time schedule real tight. It'll be spring, bring rain gear.

While I can make a 300 or 400 mile days, taking back roads and sight seeing, and having plenty of time in the evening to enjoy where I make it to.....I generally limit myself to around 250.

We made our first trip to the falls last spring. We brought a tent and spent the night about 30 miles north on Lake Ontario.

The whole ride across New York was great, we enjoyed the Finger Lakes area, Utica etc.
