Default Wisconsin Grass Strip Airport Destination

I may have mentioned this before because every time I go there I enjoy it so much that I feel compelled to share. Iola Wisconsin Airport is a grass strip in Central WI. Every Friday year round they host a luncheon. Most attendees are aviation enthusiasts but it is open to the public. Pilots typically fly tail draggers but some people arrive in classic cars and some of us ride in on motorcycles. My avatar picture is from one of the luncheons last fall. I am spoiled because it is a quick 60 to 90 minute ride depending on the route I take. We went yesterday and our son flew up from Milwaukee in a Piper Cub. The attached picture is us in front of his Cub. The menu is posted several days in advance at the link below. If you are looking for a somewhat unique ride destination, consider Iola Airport.

Now, that sounds pretty awesome! If I ever find my way riding in that neck of the woods on a Friday, I'll definitely check it out!

I have a pilot buddy that used to live near Jackson MI. Once or twice a month on a Saturday morning, they would have "Dawn Patrol". They would fly from their grass field in loose formation to breakfast somewhere. I got to ride with them once. A weird assortment of oddball, homebuilt or experimental aircraft. 6 or 8 of them the time I went. Been awhile.

Thev roads to Iola are very scenic. Make sure to stop for a bite at the Millstone. Gourmet cafe food, inexpensive.

My buddy says the bunch he flew with, flew out of Maule Field, Napoleon MI. This would have been back in the early or mid eighties I believe.
