jpalm That was every penny I spent from the moment I left home until my return. I was shocked at the amount I spent. I budgeted $4k to $5k and was pleasantly surprised. One thing I did fail to list was my 40th wedding anniversary rolled around while I was in California. I did not include the $250 dollars for 42 roses sent to my bride at work.

So, I have to ask. You spent your 40th anniversary across the country from your wife. Was there a 41st anniversary?

Coming up on June the 9th. We will be together on the east coast. I have found if you do the appropriate "homework" before and after the trip...... all is OK in the "Kingdom".

I spent our 5th anniversary in Las Vegas. That didn't go over so well. Fortunately we're still going strong, with our 12th coming later this year. I do suppose that's the difference between a 5 year newbie and a 40 year veteran. Congrats on making it that far.

You don't even have to be married for 1 DAY to know Vegas was a bad call. Anything in Nevada screams hookers & bad decisions!!

One of the things I've found when riding is that while I am spending money on food, gas and motels, usually that's about it. When I'm at home and doing my usual things, I'm spending a certain amount of money on various things, too. I spend money on food, entertainment and other junk if I'm at home. The real cost to me of a road trip how much more it will cost me to be on the road compared to staying at home.

Are you telling us you ate/drank for 22 days on the road for $675? I did a 17 day/ 5 state trip in the Southeast the last two weeks of March and I think my bar tabs alone were $600... ;-) But seriously, I had great luck with Best Westerns... all under a hundred bucks ,once you did a little negotiating with them.... I was riding two up, so one, bike, one room, food for two, harley shirts, etc.... I stayed right around $225/day.... and we did a lot of "things" too... air boat rides, go carts, out at night, etc.... we rode 2500 miles but we did other things as well..not just ride and sleep.... so, I think your $200/day budget is pretty realistic.... have fun!

I usually budget about $35/day for chow. I try to stay in motels with free hot breakfasts (unless I am camping), and I pack a small cooler with food for lunches. The cooler makes it easy to find a place to eat because I can stop anywhere...parks, scenic view turnouts, even a shady spot at a gas station after filling up. It also saves money, as a can of tuna, and a protien bar are cheaper than a restaurant.

That $35 that I budget allows for a nice evening meal at a nice place. I rarely use all of it, unless I also order a couple of bourbons/beers.
