layers in sleep bags work, too. You can get a liner that makes a huge difference and packs super small. And fleece blankets that pack about half size of bags. Leave it at home if you are sure you won't get into colder nights.
Going up to Alaska last summer we took a couple of the 3pc military sleep systems due to the colder weather. They take up considerable more room and it's rare that one needs all three pieces but the goretex is nice if you just want to stop and roll out late at night and one of the liners can always double as a pillow.
always add about 20 degrees to the highest bag rating. If it says 40 it is really only comfortable at 60 or above. The ratings are for what temp you will survive but not necessarily be comfortable at all. Stupid rating designed for sales, not comfort.
