I'm traveling from Minneapolis to Deadwood SD in one day next month. It looks like a more interesting ride through the middle of the state on 212. If I take I-90 it's 622 miles vs. 574 miles on US212. Anyone have any info on US212 in South Dakota ? Much appreciated!

Safetravelusa is a good site for road conditions. If you want to see country, take 212, if you want to get there, I-90. 212 when clear is a good 2 lane road. Been on it many times.

You will do better on 212. We like Hwy 14/34 that meets up with I-90 in Sturgis except that between Pierre and Sturgis but you really have to budget your fuel stop when you get west river because stops are far between and may not have premium fuel.

I was thinking of that route, but looking on google maps I don't see any gas stations between Pierre and Sturgis..
I was just on HWY 34 about a month ago when I headed to the west coast. When you leave Pierre, you'll see a sign that says next services in like 60-70 miles. It's a small station on the south side of the road. About another 70 miles or so down the road I found a Cenex that wasn't listed and got really lucky that it was there. There's fuel along the route, just have to keep an eye on your gauge.
between Pierre and Sturgis on 34 the only gas stop is Union Center about 30-40 miles east of sturgis and they have 85 octane regular or 87 with 10% ethanol.
That is the real downside of that route. that is why I would say 212
