I would avoid the summer months down here unless you plan on riding at night. Even then you have to deal with the bugs. Fall and spring months are the best.

May-June, September - October are the best riding months.

We took off to the Land Between the Lakes in Mid-July. Too damn hot to ride and camp.

We caved and went to the lake the rest of the vacation

Recently bought my plan ticket to San Diego and made shipment reservation for the bike. Will fly into San Diego April 17th, pick up the bike and head east! Now, the wait..

I'm looking at routes for my April trip. Anyone familiar with any of these roads:
Rt 94 to 98 out of San Diego
Old Highway 80(AZ)
Rt 85/86(AZ) to Tucson
Rt 90 from eastern TX to Pensacola FL
I like to stay off the beaten path, but I'm considering going through New Orleans
I'll probably have other route/road questions as time goes by. Thanks!
Dave

Not sure what you're calling eastern Texas or where you plan to pick up US 90. From Houston to Lafayette, LA it's flat, straight and boring. In LA it parallels I-10, so might just as well jump on the interstate. There's a better way to get to NO if you are coming through Houston, I'd be happy to let you know if your coming that way. US 90 is a bit better going south from Lafayette to New Orleans. Once you get past NO it's much more scenic. MS it's nice, scenic along the gulf, many bridges to cross etc but slow speeds in a lot of spots so as long as you're not in a hurry its ok. I can take only so much of going 30-40 mph going through all the towns. Although it does open up to 65 in places.

I'd like to hear your recommended route from Houston area to New Orleans. But, I'd like to avoid city traffic to the greatest possible extent. I was thinking of going in between Dallas and Houston and picking up Rt 90 somewhere around Lake Charles(LA).

if time permits, and you playing tourist... go down to galveston. Take the ferry over Port Bolivar. Follow some coast for a way. One could zag up to Winnie then over to Port Arthur. Been many years since I did 87 along the coast, but that could be an option? Either way cross over on TX 82 into LA and more coast. Thru Cameron then Again, choose up to Lake Arthur or south road to Abbeville. In this area you can find some real cajun experience. At Abbeville you can hit 90 south to N'awlins.

Lot more time but not interstate. Then again, crossing the Atchafalaya on I10 is cool.

I have not been down there in YEARS. No testimony to road conditions. Just a much more rural route. Then again, you may prefer hitting a casino at Lake Chuck

If you not partial to coast, marsh and swamps, the route I pointed to above may be not you. There is a lot of that around N'awlins anyway. Lufkin, TX area to Alexandria, LA has lots of wooded hills and some cool spots to sniff out. Major roads thru are often very straight.

You can take 90 East (Chef Hwy) out of NOLA. I would not want to stop for about the first 5-10 miles or so as it does not look like a nice neighborhood. After that you hit the marsh, Lake Pontchartrain, and then more marsh. Just before you cross the bridge at Bay St. Louis, you can take a right for refreshments or something to eat. A nice road that runs along the beach with a few nice eating places. Nice ride along the beach all the way over to Ocean Springs. Lots of casinos and places to eat. When you cross the bridge into OS, I would recommend you hit I10.
