I think it is one of the oldest towns in the entire U.S. We rode there last year not knowing what to expect and didn't allow a lot of time. We went there again this year and spent more time there. Event took a trolley tour and learned a lot. Next year we are planning a whole day there.

When you head north out of the Keys pick up 997 out of Florida City to 27 to South Bay/ Okeechobee area and from there you can go the shore route (76 to A1A) or inland route (441) to Daytona. All you will miss in the Miami/Fort Lauderdale area is traffic.

I need to spend a day or two there. Last time I was there it was in the early 70's.

The hint you got about staying out of Miami is accurate. No point in it. Will add a lot of time, nothing worth seeing on that part of 1/A1A. Hit the t-pike and follow it to its end and jump off at A1A south.

Coming out of the keys, heading north to Daytona, rethink following A1A. You can do it but it is a PIA. If you want to do it to say you did it, then by all means. Just realize it will be a slow slog heading north on A1A to Daytona.
It sounds like everyone is saying stay away from the coast around Miami. It's starting to sound like a good idea.
