Default Devils Highway (Morenci to Alpine)

Finally got my leave approved and I'm gonna be heading from El Paso TX to Cave Creek AZ taking the long way around. Plan is to go from EP to Morenci the first day and camp there. Second day is the Devils Highway to Alpine then across to Payson, Camp Verde and down the 17 to Cave Creek. Will grab some pictures if I can.

If you have time, you might want to go to Caballo, NM and ride to Hillsboro and Silver City. Stay on 180 to 78 and go across to Clifton and Morenci.
The ride from Hillsboro to Silver City is pretty amazing.

This is exactly the route to take from El Paso to Morenci. I would go from El Paso to Caballo and across the Black Range to Silver City and then take 180 to 78 and go through Mule Shoe to Morenci. This is really a great ride.

Since you are camping, you might consider making camp somewhere around Mule Creek. Morenci/Clifton is pretty barren.

The Devil's Highway is a really good ride and you will be doing it going up, which I prefer. Be sure and stop at Hannigan's Meadow and get a T-Shirt that says "I Survived the Devil's Highway".

It's funny you guys would mention this route. I was considering it. I think I'm sold. I'll try to get some pictures.

The Devil's Highway, or Coronado Trail is a great ride. I have done it several times. Later in the summer you run the risk of afternoon thunderstorms and even hail.

So it looks like we will be staying the night at the Morenci Motel instead of camping. Any one ever stayed there?

Here's a photo album of Hillsboro, Hatch (home of the world's best green
chile), and the Lake Valley ghost town a short ride from Hillsboro.

I have many nights at the Morenci Motel (business at the mine). Book in advance...period. Nothing special but it is a clean bed and shower. Have some great BBQ (and lots of it) at Tylers Taste of Texas. Watch the mine traffic in /around the Morenci / Clifton area.

Thanks for the heads up and suggestion. I'm always down for some good BBQ.
