Neighbors north of the border
We are taking a lap of Lake Superior in mid July, what are the must sees? We start from Central Wisconsin and hit Duluth for night one and will stay in Nipigon night two, then on to Wawa for night three, back around the bottom side of the lake after that. We are more than willing to ad a day to check stuff out, what ya got? Anything special I need to know, I do believe carrying a handgun is illegal, correct, but I will cope. Thanks, Al

The to of the lake is really cool from just east of Nipigon to Marathon, hope for no fog or rain. From Wawa to the Soo. is great also. I aim to get up there once or twice a year. Good roads and rugged shoreline. Often see dear at dusk around nipigon, saw a bear last summer N. of wawa, also bear **** at the welcome center area in Wawa, also two summers ago one west of Nipigon, both in the ditch. Never seen any moose. The Mighty Mac bridge is worth the drive also. Copper harbor is cool. The ski jump in Ironwood (copper peak) is worth the visit with tours to the top. The lake is a good ride I'll do it on a whim.

We did the Circle tour last year July (2015) I would recommend www.ridelakesuperior.com they have a lot of good ideas and information on must see locations and places to stay and eat, you don't need to follow their itinerary just pick and choose the things that interest you most but they pretty well got it covered. We saw them turn around a couple of riders at the Border due to having handguns, make sure you have your passport and check with your insurance provider for coverage,State Farm gave us special proof of insurance cards for Canada, also bring some cold weather gear we had 3 days that started in the low 40s in late July,Its a fun Ride with a lot to see if you take your time.

No handguns or arrest record (including alcohol offenses). With that said, Thunder Bay/Port Arthur is the largest urban area on Lake Superior, but I believe Nipigon is a good choice. Very little to offer in Marathon or WaWa, much more in either Sault Ontario or Michigan. Beautiful rugged shores from Nipigon to Marathon then again from WaWa to the Soo. Going West follow the shoreline from Soo, MI to Brimley and then on to Paradise, stop at the Tahquamenon Falls. Follow M-123 to Newberry then west on M-28 turning north on M-77 to Grand Marias. Take M-58 to Munising following the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore(nicest ride in the Upper Peninsula). In the Westend of the U.P. is the Porcupine Mts. and Lake of the Clouds were you can see the ski jump in Ironwood on a clear day.

This is something I need to add to my Bucket List. My wife was raised in Gwynn/Marquette as an Air Force brat and we have made a couple of very brief trips up for class reunions but have never spent more than a day before heading back home. I think she would really enjoy riding around the Great Lakes!!!

The couple we are riding with is limited to 250-300 miles a day due to back issues from MD, this is the reason for the short daily trips. I have been in Nipigon a few times fishing, going up both sides of the lake, including a night in Wawa, that's why I picked a stop there. Please feel free to add your experience to the thread after your trip, it may help alter ours.....Ride safe.
