Philly to Raleigh, NC
#2
I'm leaving wed from So Jersey. I'm heading to Fla first. I plan 95 to Baltimore then 70 to 81. I will then decide if I want 77 to N Carolina or stay and do 75 Through Atlanta and on Into Fla. I'm looking to make reasonably good time to Fla and Then slow down as I make My way west to New Orleans and up into Arkansas.

LOL ...Grew up in Norwood in the 60's 70's, but still have family in the area..
traffic gets heavy / crazy once you blend into 301/50 Kent Island before the bridge. Westbound bridge can be a little scary with the open "guardrail". take your time crossing, as it can be windy /gusts. Then you'll drag race to 301 south. 301 after you exit Rt 50 has built up continuously over the last 10 yrs. quite a few lights, shopping traffic. once south of Waldorf La Platta it's a little less traffic. stay on 301 until you're paralel to Ashland then cut across 95 and go west from there. Not sure what roads to take west of 95 but once you hit Ashland area on 301, you're getting into Richmond which can suck pretty fast. Or you could continue on and pick up 295 and go around Richmond which isn't to bad but it blends back into 95. you get that far south you can pick up Rt 1. Hopes this helps

If you leave Philly before 6am or after 9am, you should be OK with traffic until you head towards Baltimore... but the I-70 to I-81 route is key here.
I try to avoid the Washington Beltway at all costs.
I-81 turns to I-64 and there's a road that goes through one of the forests which breaks up the highway monotony for a one day ride. Local Route 29 South hugs the city north and west of where you're headed, and you enter Raleigh after cutting in between Durham and Chapel Hill.
Cheers.

301 over the bay bridge is a nice way to go. Once over the bridge you can go a few different ways to get to the Nice bridge that crosses the Potomac. You can take Rt 2/4 south into Calvert County, then thru St. Mary's County to 301 just north of the bridge. Or 301 thru PG County to Charles County then to the bridge. Once over the bridge into Virginia stay on 301 until you reach 95. That will be exit 104 about 20 minutes to either 64 or 295.
