All good routes so far. If you do end up heading up to Missoula, I would suggest taking 93 North up to Highway 200, then head west. This will take you through Thompson Falls and past the Noxon dam, and along Lake Pond Oreille up to Sandpoint. From Sandpoint, catch 95 south into CDA.

In august, the biggest thing to watch out for is fires. It's been pretty wet here this spring, so I wouldn't bet on the season being too bad though. Other than that, there's not much to worry about really.
