One of my favorite places for a rest stop is the general store in Toulumne Meadows. It's a cool place. Hikers coming in from the wilderness use it alot. They have one aisle with a big rack that is filled with care packages that hikers have sent to themselves for resupply. They go in pick up their package, take it out to the picnic tables and repack their packs with the new food supplies before heading back out into the wilderness. Some people spend the whole summer doing this. It's a gathering place for travelers and bikers fit right in. There are always a few pretty dreadlocked hippy girls with unshaven legs around. I have a weakness for them. There is magic in the air at this place. It's a place that you can let your freak flag fly and no one cares. I highly recommend a visit for a candy bar, something to drink and take in the scene when passing by.

I know the place quite well. During the 1970's and 1980's, I spent a lot of time backpacking out of Toulumne Meadows. I joking called that part of the Sierra my summer home. August is the perfect time to backpack there. It is almost perfect weather every day. And the vistas in the high country are indescribable. But now a days I am not doing any backpacking. I'll pass through Toulumne in October after the store has been disassembled. I do stop at Olmstead Point every time through.
