I enjoy a final beer with a view of the ocean at Whale City Bakery, Bar & Grill. Soon I will say goodbye to Dad and head up to the Sonoma wine country in northern California for my geologic conference.
Leaving the Marin Headlands I run into heavy afternoon traffic. I had mounted my 4 foot poster tube crosswise, but after a quick remount parallel to my frame, I am able to lane split and make up lost time. I spend the night in Bodega Bay, generously hosted by my aunt.
In the morning we hike along Bodega Head, the northernmost exposures of the Salinian terrane, granitic rocks carried northward along the San Andreas Fault. We have now left the North American Plate, and are on the Pacific Plate. An ill-conceived attempt to construct a nuclear power plant here was thwarted in 1964.
My aunt insists that I be well fed before leaving for my conference, and treats me to we a fine lunch of crab meat sandwiches and clam chowder from the Spud Point Crab Company.
