Helmets for road trip

Default Helmets for road trip

I've got a half shell and a full face. I can't make up my mind whether to take one or the other or both for a week long trip. I hate packing too much but I also hate not having what I need when I need it. I most likely have good relatively warm weather but I could hit some rain

What are your opinions, pros and cons.

I use a full face modular helmet for all my rides. I do have a half helmet for special occasions, like parades, etc. I am about to purchase a Shoei Neotec modular helmet because it is quieter. On long rides I want to listen to music and a quiet helmet also makes me less tired. If I want the wind in my face, I can lift the front of the helmet.

One of the reasons I like the modular is that when riding west in the late afternoon or early evening, I have trouble with the sun in my eyes. Lifting the modular helmet works like a sun visor. I have a big windshield so I don't get much buffering when I lift the modular helmet.

I wear a AK88 1/2 & carry a face shield if it rains.

I use to wear a 3/4 for the first 40 years I rode. Problem is when it started raining, by the time I got the face shield on the helmet and suited up I was wet. About three years ago I bought a Shoei Neotec modular helmet. It is the most comfortable helmet I have ever worn and the few times I have run into rain I can spend the time suiting up rather than putting the face shield on my helmet. Several days I have ridden in temps over 100° and anything less than a full face will cause my eyes to dry out too much. Each to his own.

I take a half-shell as well as a FF modular on trips.
One on my head and the other on top of an extra bag under a cargo net.
Best of both worlds!

Most of the time I'm in a 1/2 helmet, but always carry my Shoei Neotec in the tourpak for the bad weather. Would never start a trip without the Shoei.....amazing helmet that makes riding in rain just fine. Also, had Sierra Electronics fit it with J&M's best headset so I'm not without tunes. Yes it's expensive, but worth every penny in the cold, wind or rain.

I normally wear an open face 3/4, but I'm currently wearing a 3/4 with attached flip down face shield. I've hit some torrential rain on this trip, and this helmet has worked very well. It also has an inner shaded visor that slides down or retracts. As much as the skies have changed during this trio, I've come to really like that feature.

I also don't care to pack any more stuff than I absolutely need so I only take one helmet and that's my 3/4 that I use all the time. It comes with a visor that I can move up while in town or leave down when I am traveling.

I will be taking my Bell Star with me on vacation. The only reason is for when it rains. None of the states I'm going to require me to wear a helmet. And I'm hearing it might be cold up there in the mountains.
